Search & Rescue/Recovery Dogs and Service Dogs are always greatly admired. Who hasn't watched a show on TV where a friendly canine found a lost little girl or protected a police officer from criminals. And anyone with teenagers can appreciate the idea of a Drug Detection dog, even for personal assurance.
How do these dogs get trained and what qualifies them for the work they do?

Many of these dogs are bred and introduced to their new jobs at an early age. Many of these jobs are filled by recurring breeds, such as German Shepherds and Labrador retrievers. But that doesn't mean other breeds do not qualify or hold the same jobs elsewhere.

In order for a dog to accomplish these tasks a special training is completed that on average takes 2-4 years before the dog is allowed to publicly serve. Each job has a different requirement and job description and most dogs will not be cross trained.

Scentwork requires a lot from the team (as in Handler & canine). Many hours of practice and training, an open mindset and a dedication that goes beyond the wishing. Any dog has potential for these trainings, but not every dog has the qualities to succeed in this job. For any dog to be successful and inborn quality distinguishes whether the dog is better suited for a service job in law enforcement or for Therapy Work in a public setting. if you are interested in Search & Rescue, please contact us for more information.
